Since
1999, when the Garray town council opened
the archeological hall about “The Roman
siege of Numantia”, staged re-enactment
performances about the Numantine War started,
with Garray inhabitants performing as
actors, reaching profound effects. This
success justified the continuity of these
performances, and the creation of the
Celtiberian Cultural Association, named
“Tierraquemada”, that intends to contribute
to spread the knowledge and experience
of the Celtiberian History, as the ideal
way to share and communicate the archeological
and historical Numantine assets.
The Association main objective is to spread Numantine and Celtiberian cultural assets, as it has demonstrated with its historical reconstruction work, and the staging of Numantine Wars episodes, Numantia archeological site and Numantine Museum setting activities. Its activities go beyond this province, with participation in events in different cities and, more recently, staging, advising and providing technical support in the TV series “Memoria de España (Memory of Spain)”.
Documentation
sources for this historical reconstruction
include information provided by classical
writers, especially Polibio, and Apiano
in his “Bellum Numantinum” (Numantine
Wars). Important documentation provided
by the archeological investigation taking
place in Numantia is also used to double-check
and rebuild history.
This way, through historical reconstruction, the Association intends to create links between the scientific archeological work and its didactic presentation, making the universal dream of reliving the past available to everybody.
The Association does have two different historical reconstruction sections: one of them is dedicated to the Celtiberian world re-enactment, and the other one focused on Roman military aspects, as confronted but complementary elements, essential to understand Numantine and Celtiberian history.
